The 5-part series tells authentic stories of people who climb the Michel in Hamburg to work and play the trumpet, stand on stage in the Schmidt-Theater or pull the strings behind the scenes. We are on our way in Hamburg harbour and visit the sights along the Waterkant. Captains, sextons and artists invite us to accompany their daily work... St. Michalis Church, affectionately called "Michel" by the people of Hamburg, is not only a place of worship, but also one of the largest concert halls in the city. With around 1.5 million visitors a year, the Michel is the most popular sight in the Hanseatic city. Sexton Tobias Jahn and his team work double shifts to ensure that everything runs smoothly in the Hamburg landmark. This includes preparations for services, as well as cleaning the church and organizing many events. We accompany the staff on their daily routine, at unusual events, and let connoisseurs show and explain the historic building to us. The Schmidt and Schmidt-Tivoli theaters are located in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. The success story of the privately run theaters began in 1988, when Corny Littmann opened the Schmidt Theater, which is now known far beyond the borders of Hamburg. The Schmidt-Tivoli followed in 1991. Over 375,000 visitors a year travel from all over Germany to experience modern popular theater, musical revues and guest performances. We are up close at rehearsals and experience the artists backstage before and during the performance. Learn from the heads of the theater what is really "schmittig". And presenter and Schmidt legend Lilo Wanders shows us her St.Pauli. Among the landmarks of Hamburg is of course the port. In addition to cargo ships from all over the world and large cruise ships, launches have always shaped the image of Germany's largest seaport. Tourists and locals love the rough but warm atmosphere on the waterfront. The traditional company Barkassen-Meyer has been at home in the port of Hamburg for 90 years. The team takes us on a great trip on the Elbe. We get to know Captain Nils, a true Hamburg original. On his launch, the Gerda 2, things are cozy, the more than 90-year-old boat has character, just like Nils. The 92-year-old sea dog Peter has seen the whole world. At the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, he delights the passengers with anecdotes from his eventful life. And on the high seas with Olivia Jones: the drag queen is something of a Hamburg sight herself. Every Saturday, Olivia invites you to her very special harbor tour.
